I had an old computer recently replacd by Vista. Once, an updated video driver from Microsoft’s automatic updates nearly killed that system. Is it OK to use Windows Vista’s driver updates, or should I go to each website and double-check?

its ok to use them but sometimes the driver from the company that the hardware is made by(even if its a older driver) works better so chose wisely
That is going to be a trial and error thing. Try the vista drivers first. If you run into problems try the manufacturer or generic drivers. Typically, if I’m not having problems I never update drivers unless they add features or functionality I want.
