Why does my USB mass storage device not work after resuming from a Windows XP sleep?

by Drivers Utilities on May 15, 2010

My Cruzer 256k USB device worked fine under Windows SP1. When I upgraded to SP2 it will only work if I re-start the computer, not if I use sleep mode. This suggests it is a SP2 software problem, not hardware, as support.microsoft.com tries to tell me (it is a Toshiba Satellite). I went to my Windows Device Manager and un-checked “allow computer to turn off power to [USB root hub]“, but that didn’t solve the problem. Windows Driver Updates tells me my USB drivers are all up to date. I think this is a SP2 “sleep” problem, but of course there are no drivers for that. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I deal with problem every day, I’m from Memorex Tech. support so I recibe phone calls like this every day, what you could do is first check your service pack, then you can go to the device manager and go to the universal serial bus controllers and then click on the yellow label and check for changes in the device, and also you can try to update the driver, or just asigne another drive letter.

I haven’t heard of the problem, but I would say that your assumptions are on target. When the OS goes into sleep mode, it does turn off some services. There is most likely a service that is being turned off when it goes into sleep mode. You may try unplugging it and plugging it back in to see if Windows finds it again.
